Is it possible to achieve happiness as a designer without your work turning into a job?

APDF posed this question at its 2010 Exchange in New York City. Stefan Sagmeister shared how he has answered this question: a sabbatical.

This video segment shares some of Stefan’s thoughts on taking a break and how it can  work within your firm, as well as how it has worked for other organizations (and the creativity that results after the sabbatical!).

APDF’s 2010 Exchange Design Leader Panel, facilitated by Linda Tischler of Fast Company, tackled a number of issues facing the design profession.

In this final series of video segments, the panel discusses if designers have a higher purpose? Can we “turn spinach into candy?” Should the sustainability discussion include both materials AND consumer behavior? As designers, can we influence both?

What’s the most effective way to get there?

APDF’s 2010 Exchange Design Leader Panel, facilitated by Linda Tischler of Fast Company, tackled a number of issues facing the design profession.

In this second of three video segments, the panel discusses how design firms CAN get a seat at the table. Integral to this success is for designers to speak the language of business and quantify the value that design brings to business. Ultimately, the goal is that designers become more business savvy and business also becomes more design savvy.

It’s all about learning to speak each other’s language.

At APDF’s recent annual Exchange in New York City, invited guest speakers Blair Enns of Win Without Pitching and John Gleason of A Better View Strategic Consulting shared their insights on the procurement process.

A common viewpoint shared by both Blair and John is that the biggest problem we face as design firms is the oversupply of undifferentiated firms. Too many firms are selling too similar services to too few clients. All of the power in the buy/sell relationship is with the client.

The client has the power because we are not seen as meaningfully different.

If you’re trying to sell that your experience is better than any other firm, how is the client going to see and understand that you have the experience to address their problem? Ultimately, to answer this question, many clients ask for free work. (And, that’s a whole other discussion!)

You would not go to a client and tell them that their brand should be consumed by everyone, everywhere. Why would you go to the client and represent your business in that way? Do your homework and speak to their needs.
